چکیده

The application of ecological exergy as a suitable system-oriented development indicator of ecosystems and the estimation proposals from biomass are revised. DNA contents (C-values) of several groups of organisms are figured, either determined by flow cytometry or taken from literature. The applicability of DNA contents for determination of weighing factors to estimate ecological exergy from the biomass of organisms, as proposed by [Marques, J.C., M.A. . Pardal, S.N. Neilsen, S.E. Jørgensen, 1997. Analysis of the properties of exergy and biodiversity along an estuarine gradient of eutrophication. Ecol. Model. 102: 155–167.], is discussed and putative values for these weighing factors (b) are presented. This proposal is discussed in theoretical and practical aspects, concerning reliability and eventual application in ecological ‘exergetic’ studies. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

On the competitiveness of the move-to-front rule

We consider the list access problem and show that one questionable assumption in the original cost model presented by Sleator and Tarjan 13] and subsequent literature allowed for several competitiveness results of the move-to-front rule (MTF). We present an oo-line algorithm for the list access problem and prove that, under a more realistic cost model, no on-line algorithm can be c-competitive ...

The self-thinning rule relates plant mass to plant density in crowded, even-aged stands by a power-law equation with an exponent −3/2. The rule is widely accepted as an empirical generalization and quantitative rule that applies across the plant kingdom. It has been called the only law in plant ecology. But the evidence supporting it has recently come under critical scrutiny. The theoretical an...

A coupled physical and biological model was developed for Lake Michigan. The physical model was the Princeton ocean model (POM) driven directly by observed winds and net surface heat flux. The biological model was an eight-component, phosphorus-limited, lower trophic level food web model, which included phosphate and silicate for nutrients, diatoms and non-diatoms for dominant phytoplankton spe...

We investigated the effects of the shape of leaf area profiles and the number of canopy layers on simulated sensible and latent heat fluxes using a gradient diffusion-based biometeorological model. Three research questions were addressed through simulation experiments: (1) Given the same amount of cumulative leaf area in the vertical direction, how does the shape of the leaf area profile affect...
